Climate strategy

The University of Edinburgh is working to become net zero carbon by 2040. A refreshed version of the strategy is currently under development.

Part of our strategy is to restore woodland and peatland here in Scotland, not only to store carbon, but to restore nature and benefit local communities.

How we're making a difference

Student graduation Climate Action Sustainable Development Goal SDG 13 - banner

We are working to meaningfully embed climate and sustainability across the curriculum, offering all students the opportunity to engage with climate and environmental topics.

We're taking action on campus to make positive change through sustainable, evidence-based practices.

We harness our operational impact to restore nature, achieve our net zero carbon targets, reduce waste and use resources responsibly.

Tackling the climate and environmental crisis is one of the University's three primary research missions.

We are dedicated to understanding the sustainability challenges we face and embedding climate-conscious practices into all our research activities.

We have divested from fossil fuel since 2021.

If divestment signifies what the University is against, social impact and climate positive investments are what we stand for.

The University is investing in a number of social and environmental causes, while aiming to nurture a community of social entrepreneurship among students and staff.
