The first of several partnerships within the Forest and Peatland programme, the University is proud to be in a long-term partnership aimed at ecological restoration and climate change mitigation with Atholl Estates in Highland Perthshire. Image Atholl Estate The partnership, formed in 2023, involves the creation of 1,198 hectares of new woodland on Atholl Estates. This ambitious project will not only enhance the local biodiversity by providing habitats for various species but also play a crucial role in carbon sequestration. By absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, these new woodlands will contribute significantly to mitigating the impacts of climate change and increase biodiversity. The University’s in-house forester will oversee and monitor the long-term gains. Peatland restoration In addition to woodland creation, the project includes peatland restoration efforts. Peatlands are vital carbon sinks, and their restoration is essential in the fight against climate change. When peatlands are degraded, they release stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Restoring these areas helps to re-wet the land, preventing further carbon emissions, revitalising the natural habitat, and acts as a natural flood mitigation measure.
