We are working to increase sustainability across the University's estate.

The University of Edinburgh uses a mixture of on-site energy generation on campus which includes gas combined heat and power (CHP) and solar photovoltaics (PV).

Behaviour change energy-saving campaigns

We encourage energy-saving behaviours through the Take Action for Sustainability pilot, Sustainability Framework and Sustainability Champions network.

Here are some top tips to save energy:

Energy Efficiency

Switch off appliances at the socket when not in use, only boil as much water as you need, and consider lowering your PC default settings to switch off after inactivity. Some materials such as 'switch off' stickers are available on request. Check out our sustainable labs webpage for advice on specialist equipment .

Heat Effectively

Wear layers in the winter to keep warm, close the windows and doors to keep heat in, and avoid the use of space heaters. Have an issue with heating on campus? Report temperatures above 28°C or below 19°C .

I'm too hot or too cold

Need help? Reporting faults related to lighting, heating, water, and other facility issues helps save energy. Identify your nominated fault reporter for your area and promptly report anything that appears problematic. This could include noticing faulty motion sensor lighting, dripping taps, and draughty windows.
