Since the department formed in 2014 and began reporting to Hugh, his support and constructive critique have helped shape and guide the University's work to improve social responsibility and sustainability in a wide range of areas.

Hugh played a key role in supporting the University to:

  • create it's challenging climate strategy, Zero by 2040
  • improving the University's responsible investment activities and support plans to grow social investments
  • investigate how forests could play a role in our drive to be zero carbon
  • supporting the development of the University's improved community engagement approach and establishing Edinburgh Local

For these reasons, we are delighted to award Hugh with a Special Award for demonstrating "Leadership in Sustainability".

In Spring 2020, Hugh will leave the University of Edinburgh to take up a new role as Senior Vice-President with the Singapore Management University.

We thank him for his invaluable support over the last six years and wish him success in his new role.

As Hugh leaves us for pastures new, I’m delighted we’ve been able to recognise his invaluable support to me, to the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability, and to the wider social and civic responsibility agenda since 2014. In that time we have made great progress, and I have no doubt that this could not have been achieved without Hugh’s involvement, interest, commitment and his role as a critical friend.
